Abstract

Smartphone addiction is a social phenomenon characterized by causing symptoms related to both substance and behavioral addictions. Among the most vulnerable population is the university population. Despite the exponential growth of cell phone use, in Mexico, there are few investigations and instruments explore whether the use is addictive or recreational. The objective of this work was to evaluate the validity and reliability of an instrument with the ability to measure addiction to smartphones. The instrument was applied to 207 students from National Autonomous University of Mexico. To assess the validity of the content, it was submitted to the evaluation of four expert judges. Construct validity was obtained by exploratory factor analysis with maximum likelihood extraction and oblique rotation. In addition, 0.919 was obtained in the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test, and a chi-square value of3221.964, gl 378, statistically significant (p<0.001). The degree of reliability was analyzed with a Cronbach’s Alpha, obtaining a coefficient of0.927, which showed a high internal consistency. It is concluded that the psychometric properties of the instrument are adequate to evaluate the university population.
