This article is the result of a research that had as its central objective to investigate the first steps of psychoanalysis in Mato Grosso, focusing specifically on psychoanalytic movements and based on the history of psychoanalysis in Brazil. From the identification of the pioneers of psychology and research on the theoretical approaches on which they were based, psychoanalysis stands out as a theoretical perspective that bases the work of most professionals in the 1970s and 1980s, which is the period in which the first professional practices in psychology are identified in the state. The literature review shows us that Freudian ideas came to Brazil in the first decades of the twentieth century. The main
urban centers that fostered psychoanalytic training and practice were São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre. During its diffusion, there was a series of events and formation of groups whose objective was to circulate the psychoanalytic ideas and ensure studies for clinical practice. This is the case of Mato Grosso: the first professionals organized themselves, founded associations and planned training courses. These activities strengthened their actions in the face of the challenges encountered in a territory where, far from the great centers of training, it needed to create spaces to strengthen and expand.
