The work and role of psychologists in special schools in Santiago, Chile was analyzed. The present research was developed as an exploratory and descriptive study, including the study of specific variables and government functions. A low average of paid professional hours was observed (20 hours), and an unequal distribution in the development of the functions. The conclusion was that the number of hours is insufficient for the functions of the psychologist, which emphasizes the aspect concerned with the student's enrolement (diagnosis). The role of the psychologist is structured by administrative factors, professional work and university studies.
